is an electronic editorial published by the Martin Marty Center. The name of the e-mailed “column” comes from the assignment: to engage in “sighting” evidences of religious discourse and commenting on events in the field of religion, especially if they have obvious public consequences.

Marty considers this expression to be part of what José Ortega y Gasset describes as the vocation of “civic pedagogy.” That is, Sightings is less a forum for expressing opinions promoting ideology as it is intended to be a help as readers frame issues in public religion.
